A city with a history as elaborate and illustrious as Victoria has seen no shortage of colourful characters. The only problem is, that some of them love the city so much that they tend to overstay their welcome. Here are four places to find the spirits of Victoria’s inhabitants who have chosen to spend their afterlives in the city…

1. Parliament Buildings
When you create the blueprint for a building as beautiful at Victoria’s Parliament Building, I suppose it’s no surprize that you don’t want to leave it when you cross over to the other side. Francis Rattenby, the acclaimed architect who designed the buildings in the 1890s is said to walk the building’s hallowed halls.

 2. The Maritime Museum
For a real case of the jitters, what could be scarier that making your way to Victoria’s Maritime Museum in the hope of bumping into ‘The Hanging Judge’ Baillie Begbie? At six feet four inches tall, with a Van Dyke beard, a gaucho hat and a long black cloak, the ghost of Begbie is a commanding figure. Don’t say we didn’t warn you!

3. St Ann’s Academy
Nothing – NOTHING – is scarier than the ghosts of nuns! The academy was once a convent school and it’s said that the ghosts of the nine sisters who are buried in the grounds like to wander around the academy in the earlier hours of the morning.

4. Fairmont Empress
Francis Rattenbury – the architect who designed the Parliament Buildings and the magnificent Empress – is also said to walk the halls of his beloved hotel when he’s not wandering around Parliament. Keep an eye out for him. He’s a thin guy with a big moustache and a walking cane.
