When the new year has come and gone and the holiday festivities have ended, there are still two months of winter to enjoy! Victoria has no shortage of great winter activities for those who want the good times to go on, so check out some of our suggestions below and don’t forget to bundle up!
Visit the winter gardens at HCP
Strolling through a garden of blooms is usually a springtime activity, but did you know that a winter garden is equally a lovely sight to behold? If you’ve never visited a winter garden before, now is the time to explore! Head over to Victoria’s Horticulture Centre of the Pacific (HCP), where you can view an exquisite garden space organized into five sections, each distinguished by unique plant species and design elements. You can stroll through nature trails, bird watch and venture through the Bonsai Garden, the largest garden of its' kind in Canada! In addition, the Doris Page Winter Garden is one of the few places in Canada where you'll find plants and flowers in full bloom year-round.
Go ice skating
There are many places in Victoria where you can gracefully slide or slice through the ice. Ice skating is a beloved Canadian pastime! Whether you’re a seasoned skater or you're more like Bambi on ice, it’s always fun to get out onto the rink and whirl around with other happy skaters. Check out the nearby
Save-on-Foods Memorial Centre
for public skate times - admission is just $2 on Tuesdays!
Explore the Victoria Public Market
Taking a leisurely walk through Victoria’s Public Market is a great activity to do year-round, but it is especially relaxing and warm in the winter! You can nurse a hot drink and take your time browsing through different shops and visiting vendors offering unique handmade items and fresh locally sourced food items. Even if you’ve drained your budget on Christmas gifts, you can still take up window shopping, savour some fabulous and affordable tasty treats and spend quality time with friends and family.
Winter in Victoria is truly something special to experience! Our temperate west coast climate is ideal where you need not be shuttered indoors sheltering yourself from blizzards - rather you can freely experience the magic of Victoria without the summertime crowds!
