As our lives get busier and busier, it can become more and more difficult to set aside some time for the things that really matter: things like spending quality time with our nearest and dearest.

So if you’re on a family getaway in Victoria and you’re looking for some great ways to make the very most of your time together – things to do that will really bring the clan together - book into a hotel near the Royal BC Museum and check out the brilliant Family: Bonds and Belonging exhibition, which opens on June 2.

After all, what better way to focus on the strength of family bonds than by visiting an exhibition that is totally dedicated to that very subject?

The exhibition focuses on the question of whether it’s possible to choose your family, or if it is totally determined by blood ties. It explores conventional concepts of family and dismantles traditional ideas to discover different perspectives of the concept of ‘family’.

Drawing on the experiences of historic and contemporary First Nations families, as well as those of settlers and immigrants in BC, the Family: Bonds and Belonging exhibition unveils universal themes that unite families across timespans and cultures. It brings together photographs, portraits, costumes and historic treasures to demonstrate that ‘belonging’ is more than a tradition, habit or prejudice.

You can even learn how to begin genealogical research into your own family. The kids will love that.

The exhibition runs until October 31.

If you’re looking for a hotel beside the Royal BC Museum, the Best Western PLUS Carlton Plaza is a great option. Take a walk down Government Street from this AAA Three Diamond heritage hotel and in seven minutes you’ll find yourself amid the Inner Harbour and the Legislature Buildings. It’s also a convenient location if you’d like to take the kids dolphin or whale watching – an adventure they are sure to never forget.
