We may be living in strange times right now, but they have also provided us with a unique opportunity to explore the beauty of our own home province. Vancouver Island, with its mild climate, rugged shores, and lush forests, is truly an outdoor enthusiast’s paradise. There are a wide variety of hikes to do in and around Victoria, from easy jaunts to more challenging climbs, and all with opportunities to take in some seriously sweeping views. Here are three of our favourites.

Mount Tolmie Park

Nicknamed as “the best place to view the city,” Mount Tolmie Park is known for providing exceptional panoramic views from its peak. There are many ways to go up, with over 1500 metres of trails that cut through meadows and rock slopes, and picnic areas, viewpoints, and secluded natural areas to stop at along the way. The area is filled with history, too: traces of the last ice age can be seen in the broken rock faces below the summit.

Mount Douglas Park

There are more than 21 kilometres of trails to enjoy here, whether you want to reach Mount Douglas’ summit or enjoy the secluded sandy beach at the base. At 188 hectares, the park contains the largest urban forest on the Saanich Peninsula and is teeming with wildlife: fish, lizards, lichen, birds, and more.

Thetis Lake

The network of moderately challenging trails that frame Lower and Upper Thetis Lake are picturesque and pass through lush rainforest. A popular spot for hikers, runners, and dog walkers, Thetis Lake provides a wide variety of paths to explore. Keep close to the water for optimal views of the beautiful scenery.

Whether you’re visiting the island for the weekend or you’re planning a staycation closer to home, Best Western Plus Carlton Plaza Hotel is the top choice for clean, comfortable, and affordable accommodations in Victoria’s downtown harbour. Our convenient location makes it easy to get to all the hikes listed above, and in-room amenities including an individual drip coffee maker, kettle, bar fridge, and plush bedding make for a welcome and cozy return.
