Black History Month has arrived, and while black history deserves to be celebrated and honoured all year long, the events below provide a place to start for people looking to educate themselves. From musical events like “The Fifth Element” Exploring Hip Hop to a virtual cemetery tour dedicated to the graves of black pioneers, check out this list of free Black History Month events happening in Victoria.

The Fifth Element

The BC Black History Awareness Society is hosting a virtual event called The Fifth Element on February 20, which will explore all there is to know about hip hop. Specifically, this two-hour event will cover the five elements of this popular dance style: Knowledge, Djing/Lyricism, Breakdancing/African dance, and Graffiti. It will also explore themes of identity, power, resistance, and creativity related to hip hop and black and indigenous youth. Legendary hip hop photographer and member of the Hip Hop Hall of Fame, Ernie Paniccioli, will be the guest speaker for the event, which will take place via Zoom.

Black History Month Ross Bay Cemetery Tour

Learn about the history of Black pioneers and other influential black figures in Canada through the free Ross Bay Cemetery Tour. This virtual guided tour will show viewers the graves of Black pioneers and others who were influential in the migration of black people to the British colony. The event is taking place on Sunday, February 21 from 2 pm until 3 pm, and will be hosted by John Adams of the Old Cemeteries Society, and Valin Marshall of the BC Black History Awareness Society.
